Scouting 100

Heslington Scout Group has been going since 1974, but we are part of a much bigger organisation that this year, 2007, celebrates its centenary.

To mark the occasion, we had a Centennial Camp at Hutton's Ambo (where else could be more Heslington) for all the sections, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts plus leaders, the Committee and various hangers on.

Sunrise Service

Like many other scout groups celebrating, we held a sunrise service. Unlike many other scout groups we decided to have ours at the sunrise.

It was a 4am "rise and shine" on camp. "Rise" was akin to raising the dead and there wasn't that much in the "shine" department. By 4:30am we were on the road to Castle Howard where we walked along the Centennial Way for a short while before we found a clearing through which to observe the sunrise. Was it worth it? Well, you don't get to take many pictures like this one:

Bo'sun gave a short reading and Scott read Baden-Powell's final address. We were treated to the lone sound of a trumpet too just to make the event more memorable.

It was then back to the site for breakfast and the rest of the day.

York Minster Sleepover & Sunrise Service

Beavers and Cubs were very privileged to be allowed to sleep over York Minster prior to the official York and Ebor District Sunrise service.

At the slightly later time of a few minutes before 8am, we renewed our promises before getting started with the rest of the day.
